"A Round Of Golf Should Be
Eighteen Inspirations."
A. W. Tillinghast
Roanoke Country Club is widely recognized as the premiere golfing facility in Western Virginia. Originally designed by legendary golf architect A.W. Tillinghast, the layout features three nine-hole courses that are played in three eighteen-hole combinations. With 27 holes of exceptional golf, Roanoke Country Club Members enjoy variety along with unlimited access to the best golf in the region.
Each course presents unique challenges and inspirations. The Dogwood Course features narrow fairways and small greens. The Redbud Course has open fairways and medium-sized greens. The Crabapple Course offers narrow, but spectacular tree-lined fairways and large greens.
To commemorate its Centennial Celebration in 1999, the Club embarked on an ambitious facilities improvement project. The first phase of the planned golf course project was completed during the winter of 1999. It focused on the Dogwood nine. Under the direction of Lester George, golf course architect, the number one and number five holes were completely rennovated and several other greens were rebuilt. Bordering a new four-acre pond, the new design provides a breathtaking view and a challenging test that we are sure "Tillie" would approve. The new pond not only enhances the course, it provides a reliable supply of water for irrigation, independence from outside water suppliers, and significant cost savings to the Club.
Future plans call for reconstruction of the remaining greens and green-side bunkers on the Dogwood nine, conforming to the Tillinghast tradition. A new state-of-the-art practice facility will also be constructed.
The renovation also brought sweeping improvements to the golf-related areas within the Clubhouse. A new Golf Shop is the focal point of the lower level. Its mall-like layout features generous display areas for golf equipment, apparel and accessories. The new ladies' and gentlemen's locker rooms are richly appointed with new wood lockers and vanity areas and feature expanded shower and dressing facilities. The Ladies' Lounge creates an inviting and spacious area which may be used for card playing, greeting guests or just relaxing before or after golf. A new Golfer's Eatery and Rest Stop has also been added to the golf side of the Clubhouse. It provides snacks, beverage and convenient access to rest rooms during a round of golf.
The Club's golfing program is led by a top-rated professional staff which has developed programs and events to be enjoyed by men, women and juniors at all levels of playing ability. Helping members improve their abilities is an important mission for our golf professionals. They offer clinics and lessons, an acclaimed junior golf program, and play an important role in the annual Lifetime Sports Camp for children.
