| The Sporting Life: Tennis
From the very beginning, over 100 years ago, tennis has been an important part of life at Roanoke Country Club. The founding members played on two courts just off Franklin Road. Today, members enjoy the finest and most complete tennis facilities in Western Virginia. The RCC tennis complex consists of five indoor Vel-Play (clay) surface courts with a raised and terraced viewing area. Outside there are six more lighted Vel-Play courts with stadium viewing, and three hard surface courts. The Tennis Center also provides lounge and locker facilities. An experienced and highly acclaimed USTA professional staff provides lessons and clinics, and oversees a year-round calendar of tournaments and events for all groups and ages. The Club's full-service tennis shop offers a complete inventory along with professional advice on selecting the equipment best suited to your game. Saber joined Roanoke Country Club in 2003 as an assistant pro. Prior to joining RCC, Saber was a teaching professional at Raintree Swim and Racquet Club in Richmond, Virginia. He attended the Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida, and while there he represented his native country of Algeria in many international events, including the 1998 Junior Olympics in Moscow, Russia. Saber is a Virginia Tech graduate who, during his college tennis career, played the No. 1 position for Tech and was ranked 50th nationally. His numerous achievements at Virginia Tech include winning the Virginia State Championship in his junior year, winning the Wake Forest Invitational and achieving the title of Northeast Region 1 Champion. He also upset the NCAA’s top-ranked player, Jesse Witten. Saber was the recipient of the prestigious Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award of the Northeast Region in 2002. |
